The leadership board of the prestigious performing arts venue has voted to be renamed the Trump-Kennedy Center, according to a statement from the White House.

White House Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated on social media that the board's vote was unified, attributing it to "the tremendous efforts President Trump has done over the last year in saving the building."

"This promises to be a truly great team long into the future! The building will no doubt achieve new levels of grandeur and success," Leavitt continued.

The planned renaming is shaping up as highly controversial, particularly in Washington, D.C., where the center has served as an iconic landmark since its construction and dedication for President John F. Kennedy.

Background of the Center

Soon after beginning his term, President Donald Trump replaced all the center's incumbent trustees and named supporters in their stead. The newly constituted board later moved to elect Trump chairman.

The president was instrumental in securing approximately $257 million in federal funds to cover major renovations and other financial needs at the national venue.

Historical Roots

The idea for a national performing arts center began in the 1950s. Following the murder of President John F. Kennedy, the 35th president, in 1963, the planned venue was named in his honor.
