No fewer than 13 passengers perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
