The speculation surrounding the recent awards show was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team could be building a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths that are viable if you're playing as a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this legendary franchise.
