White House Reveals Government Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Third Week

Administration officials disclosed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for letting employees go.

While Vought provided no details on which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a DHS representative noted that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has used the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who provide essential functions to the public nationwide,” stated a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is not expected to be ended before then.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican bill, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Previously, unions sought a temporary restraining order to block the government from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Moreover, a court official ordered the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been brought back to carry out layoffs.

A report contended that a government shutdown restricts the authority of the administration to carry out firings, referencing official advice that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs took place on the same day that federal workers received only a incomplete payment for the end of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since appropriations expired at the start of the period.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate stated. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
